The Autumn Equinox is about the poignant seasonal turning toward winter and inward time. It also a time for personal assessment and getting our homes in the right condition so that we are able to thrive and start fresh.

10 Tips for Organizing Your Home for Fall Equinox

1. Safety Check: Schedule your fall and winter heating maintenance and service. Be sure smoke detectors have fully charged batteries and carbon monoxide (CO2) detectors are in place and working.

2. Chimney Sweep: Hire a chimney sweep service to clean the soot out of your chimney. Even with gas and electric fires, clearing the chimney of bird nests and soot is essential to the safety of your home.

3. Camera & photos: Upload spring and summer vacation photos to the cloud. Be prepared with clear or new memory cards to shoot festive holiday pictures. Design and order holiday cards now.

4. Start early: Review your holiday checklists now. Ease the stress and enjoy.

5. Unpack & donate: Donate excess holiday décor and festive decorationsDo thisearly so another family can benefit and enjoy your beautiful décor. You will also save valuable storage space.

6. Create space: Organize your bedroom and hall closets for the busy social season. Clear space for guests’ coats by clearing and donating unneeded items. Add an artistic storage piece at the front door for gloves, scarves and umbrellas.

7. Don’t wait until the first freeze to discover coats are too small: Check coat, glove and mitten sizes now to be sure you and your family have the right size when they are needed. Donate clothing they have outgrown.

8. Fall cleaning. Family and holiday guests will be arriving, and you want your home to sparkle! Organize hall & guest room closets, and garage. Clean the carpets and windows. Deep clean the kitchen, refrigerator, and freezer in preparation for holiday cooking.

9. Extra warmth: Before the cold settles in, we have warm nights and chilly nights. Be prepared by placing a throw or comforter at the end of all of your beds for extra warmth. Place soft slippers bedside.

10. Gift list: Prepare a gift wish-list and ask your loved ones to share their thoughts on gift ideas. Start shopping online and at stores if you haven’t already.

Clutter, Defined

What one person calls clutter another calls collections or treasures, so the first step is to figure out what qualifies as clutter. "Other people can't decide what is clutter for you," says Cynthia Townley Ewer of Richland, Wash., the editor of the web site Organized Home.

Peter Walsh, an organizational expert and former host of The Learning Channel's Clean Sweep show, divides clutter into two general types. "Memory" clutter is stuff that reminds us of important events, like old school programs or newspaper clippings. "Someday" clutter refers to items you won't toss because you feel you might need them someday.

"It's about balance," Walsh says of clutter control. "If you have so much stuff it drags you into the past or pulls you into the future, you can't live in the present."

Solheimar Ecovillage - Healthy Living For All

On a recent trip to Iceland I discovered the village of Solheimar founded in 1930 by Sesselja, she was fortunate to be able to go to the European mainland and study.  She travelled for six years in Denmark, Switzerland and Germany.  She studied pedagogy, child nursing and kindergarten management, organic farming and anthroposophy.  She was the first Icelander to study how best to care for people with mental challenges.

When visiting their educational center and talking to the program manager I learned that in addition to all that Sesselja did initially the organization has built out programs around wind power, consumption, waste, recycling, composting and donating along with many other facets of living a healthy productive life with the least impact.

Various rooms were setup around Solheimar to demonstrate, from a visual and tactile perspective, their educational programs. The rooms were organized in this way to represent how living this way is beneficial to every aspect of your life. 


It is an incredibly diverse, impressive and inspiring organization on every level.

Letting Go Of Things - A Personal Story

I had a life changing event last year, my husband passed away of cancer, and while I had to deal with all the emotional challenges that came along with this change I had a very short time to downsize as I had to move from our home. This required that I tap into my organizing expertise but this time for myself.

I had a process and I felt it important to share what I did in hopes it can help those that have found their way to Healthy Organizing. We are all attached to "stuff" and letting go isn't easy but it is inevitable, as what you leave behind someone else will have to eventually let go of. The sooner you let go, the better you will feel.

These are the steps I took to let go:

1.  I donated all medical supplies and devices to a medical clinic as they use what they are able and rest are shipped to countries in need.

2,  I donated items such as hats, jackets, pants, shorts, shoes and socks to a local charity that serves the homeless.

3.  We lived in a central part of San Francisco so I was able to put household and kitchen items on the street as this is common practice and tends to be picked up quickly,  

4.  My husband was chef which meant he had a large collection of cookbooks. I decided to donate the majority of the cookbooks to a culinary institute as the students benefit greatly from these books as they usually cannot afford them while in school. 

5.  For what remained, with the help of friends, I established what it was I wanted to keep and what I thought would make cherished gifts for family and friends. 

I have worked with many clients who have lost loved ones so I have spent many hours in attics, garages and storage units and while it seems impossible to let go of these things it feels lighter once you do. This process will not only benefit you but it benefits many others as well. 

Clutter & Depression by HouseLogic

Do dishes in the sink, toys throughout the house, stuff covering every flat surface; this clutter not only makes our homes look bad, it makes us feel bad, too.

At least that’s what researchers at UCLA’s Center on Everyday Lives and Families (CELF) discovered when they explored in real time the relationship between 32 California families and the thousands of objects in their homes. The resulting book, Life at Home in The Twenty-First Century, is a rare look at how middle-class Americans use the space in their homes and interact with the things they accumulate over a lifetime.

Our over-worked closets are overflowing with things we rarely touch.

It turns out that clutter has a profound affect on our mood and self-esteem. CELF’s anthropologists, social scientists, and archaeologists found:

A link between high cortisol (stress hormone) levels in female home owners and a high density of household objects. The more stuff, the more stress women feel. Men, on the other hand, don’t seem bothered by mess, which accounts for tensions between tidy wives and their clutter bug hubbies.

Women associate a tidy home with a happy and successful family. The more dishes that pile up in the sink, the more anxious women feel.

Even families that want to reduce clutter often are emotionally paralyzed when it comes to sorting and pitching objects. They either can’t break sentimental attachments to objects or believe their things have hidden monetary value.

Although U.S. consumers bear only 3% of the world’s children, we buy 40% of the world’s toys. And these toys live in every room, fighting for display space with kids’ trophies, artwork, and snapshots of their last soccer game.

Although Life At Home documents the clutter problem, the book offers no solutions. But there are some simple things you can do to de-clutter your home and raise your spirits.

1. Adopt the Rule of Five. Every time you get up from your desk or walk through a room, put away five things. Or, each hour, devote five minutes to de-cluttering. At the end of the day, you’ve cleaned for an hour.

2. Pledge to clear and clean your kitchen sink every day. It takes a couple of seconds more to place a dish in the dishwasher than dump it in the sink. A clean sink will instantly raise your spirits and decrease your anxiety.

3. Return to yesteryear when only photos of ancestors or weddings earned a place on a shelf. Put snapshots in a family album, which will immediately de-clutter many flat surfaces.

4. Unburden your refrigerator door. Researchers found a correlation between the number of items stuck to the fridge door and the amount of clutter throughout the house. Toss extra magnets, file restaurant menus, and place calendars in less conspicuous places.

5. Hack out unexpected new storage space in out-of-the-way places, like under the stairs.

6. Get inspired by these creative de-cluttering ideas we found on Pinterest.

7. Fill a box with items you don’t love or use. Seal the box and place it in a closet. If you haven’t opened the box in a year, donate it (unopened!) to charity.

More Happiness, Less Stuff

Within the environmental community, there is widespread acceptance of the Ehrlich equation that establishes the relationship among four factors: population (P), affluence (A), technology (T), and environmental impact (I).

The relationships are expressed in the famous Ehrlich impact equation:  I=PxAxT (published in The Population Bomb by Paul and Anne Ehrlich).   Many consider this equation immutable, and believe there is no way to break its iron grip on humanity.  As any of the three independent variables grows, environmental impact increases.

How do we break the grip of this equation on the future of humankind?  How do we rewrite the equation for a sustainable future?

One huge challenge to the global industrial system is to move the T (call it T1) from the numerator to the denominator (now call it T2).   Renewable, recyclable materials fit the category, as does renewable energy.   As technologies transition from T1 that belong in the numerator to T2 in the denominator, the equation changes to:

and impacts (I) are reduced.

As T2 displaces T1, the future looks very different.

But, what about the capital “A” for affluence?   It suggests that affluence is an end in itself, satisfying unlimited “wants,” rather than “needs”.  What if we converted “A” to “a”, signifying affluence to be a means to an end, and not the end in itself? Then the equation would read: I = .
And what if societal changes and priorities allowed happiness to increase without more and more affluence?  Then the equation, over time, could evolve to:

Now we have the impact equation for a sustainable future.
When I talk about this on the speaking circuit, this explanation always gets a big reaction – audiences love the idea of more happiness, less stuff.  So why do we find ourselves in the mess than we’re in, environmentally and socially speaking?  How will we find our way out of it?

Industrialism—the industrial system of which we are each a part—developed in a different world from the one we live in today:  fewer people, more plentiful natural resources, simpler lifestyles:  less stuff.  It made perfect sense to exploit nature to increase human productivity—300 years ago!  These days, with people overly abundant and nature scarce and diminishing, industry moves, mines, extracts, shovels, burns, wastes, pumps and disposes of four million pounds of material to provide one average, middle?class American family their needs for a year.  With the whole world aspiring to the American standard of living, that cannot go on and on and on in a finite Earth; and it is finite, you can see it from space; that’s all there is and there isn’t any more.  The rate of material throughput—the metabolism of the industrial system—is now endangering prosperity, as much as enhancing it, and the toxicity of some of that stuff is really endangering the biosphere, thus everyone’s health, ours and that of the 30 million other species that share the biosphere with us.  It is manifestly the wrong thing to do.

When we talk about environmental destruction as the “wrong thing to do,” we’re talking about what I see as a shifting mind-set, a growing sense of ethics. This growing sense of ethics might be the push we need to find our way out of the mess that we’re in.

In the final analysis, the ethical thing—the right thing to do—is driven by enlightened self?interest.  The study of ecology tells us we are part of nature, not above or outside it; it also tells us that what we do to the web of life we do to ourselves.  Industrial ecology tells us the industrial system, as it operates today, simply cannot go on and on and on, taking, making, wasting—abusing the web of life.  The industrial system takes too much, extracting and frittering away Earth’s natural capital on wants, not needs.  It wastes too much.  It abuses too much.  It takes stuff and makes stuff that very quickly ends up in landfills or incinerators—more waste, more abuse, more pollution.  I’m told that less than 3% of the throughput of the entire industrial system has any value six months afterward.  We industrialists operate a waste-making machine.  And all of us are part of the problem, either as producers, specifiers, users, or consumers.

I believe that a sustainable society depends totally and absolutely on a new mind-set to deeply embrace ethical values.  Values that, along with an enlightened self-interest, drive us to make new and better decisions.  I also believe that it doesn’t happen quickly … it happens one mind at a time, one organization at a time, one building, one company, one community, one region, one new, clean technology, one industry, one supply chain at a time … until the entire industrial system has been transformed into a sustainable system, existing ethically in balance with Earth’s natural systems, upon which every living thing is utterly dependent.   Again, what we do to the web of life, we do to ourselves.

So what about this sacred shrine of growth and affluence, the one that fuels the extractive, abusive and linear technologies upon which we have become so dependent?  How do we make the shift?  How do we decide, if we are moving toward a sustainable society, what should grow?  What should not grow?

Here are some thoughts to stimulate our thinking:  The lowest impact technologies, those that are beneficial, (belong in the denominator), should grow.  The abusive “numerator technologies” should shrink and eventually disappear.  The sale of services should grow.  The sale of products should shrink.  Applied brainpower should grow.  Applied brute force should shrink.  Market shares for the sustainable companies should grow.  For the unsustainable companies, market shares should shrink—to zero.

Each of us has a role to play because, each of us has power.  The power to vote, with ours dollar and our ballots.  The power to shape commerce, with what we buy and what we don’t buy.  We have power as individuals and collectively, as a community of people.  We each make choices, large and small, every day, that translate into power.  Power to change the paradigm.

To get where we need to be requires a vast mind-shift that leads to a cumulative and collective mandate:  Less stuff, more happiness.  Then the revised impact equation can take center stage.
